Pranayama

Pranayama is a collection of breathing exercises developed by the ancient yogis for purification, mental focus, rejuvenation, and healing.

The word 'Pranayama' is a Sanskrit word that combines the terms 'prana' meaning 'life force' and 'ayama' meaning 'expansion, extension or control of breath.

Pranayama is the fourth 'limb' of yoga but may also be viewed as a 'sadhana' or spiritual practice in its own right.

What will a class be like?

Pranayama is traditionally practiced after yogasana and as such, classes will begin with a small sequence of yogasana or other movements to warm the body for pranayama practice.

Following the movements, a variety of different breathing practices will be performed. These may vary depending upon the overall aim of the class, where in the sequence of exercises they are performed, or the students' individual abilities.

The majority of pranayama practices are performed seated, however, some practices are also performed lying down.
